Le Danemark a livré bataille à la Prusse et l'Autriche pour le contrôle du duché de Schleswig. Malgré une blessure handicapante, l'homme reprend sa place de métayer au service du baron Severin dont le fils, Didrich, est lui aussi revenu - traumatisé - de la guerre. Peter et Laust se lient bientôt d'amitié avec Inge, la fille de l'intendant du domaine. Au fil des mois et des années, celle-ci consigne sa vie dans un journal.
